What is Periapsis Press?
Periapsis Press is a website curating recommendations of indie sci-fi and fantasy books. Our reviews are positive—we only post about books we liked—and longform. They can be browsed by cover for a spoiler-free experience, but readers who want to know better what they are getting into can dive into our detailed analysis.
We also post other articles that cater to readers, such as new releases, author interviews, and events. Every post contains a book recommendation.

Is Periapsis Press a publisher?
The “press” in Periapsis Press is used in the sense of “the gathering and publishing of news.” Our goal is to be “good press” for good indies, focusing on our reviews and articles.
Periapsis Press has organized and published the Periapsis Christmas anthologies, David Roome has written and published his own novels, and Katie has done some freelance editing in the industry. It is not our intention at this time to become a publisher in a more traditional sense.
This means that, unless otherwise disclosed, the authors whose work we review are independent and not associated with Periapsis Press professionally.
What does Periapsis Press review?
Periapsis Press reviews sci-fi and fantasy books including novels, novellas, and short story collections.
While we appreciate other story forms (comics, graphic novels, movies, etc.), they are not our area of expertise, and our passion lies with the written word.
Does Periapsis Press review Christian Fiction?
Periapsis Press is a good place to find sci-fi and fantasy stories that treat Christianity and faith with respect. We tend to avoid “preachy” stories where the entertainment takes a backseat to the message. But keep in mind that not every book on our site is written from a Christian perspective.
Our reviews are written from the perspective of our faith. The books we review do not necessarily share that, but their themes and values do not come in conflict with our Christian worldview.
Does Periapsis Press review books for men?
Yes!
Statistically, men are interested in the science fiction, pulp adventure, and sword and sorcery books we’ve reviewed that prioritize the story elements of action and setting.
Many of the books we’ve reviewed are in fact written by male authors and with an audience in mind that shares their tastes.
Furthermore, men will likely find themes and values that appeal to them (heroism, fatherhood, legacy) rather than themes designed to appeal to the very specific subset of female readers pursued by tradpub.
Of course, the books we review are enjoyed by both men and women.
Does Periapsis Press review YA / Teen Lit or Children’s Literature?
Periapsis Press does review some Young Adult sci-fi and fantasy books, but not exclusively, and from the perspective of an adult audience.
We recommend you read books yourself if you are seeking to determine if they are appropriate for your child.
Does Periapsis Press review traditionally published or small press books?
Periapsis Press reviews only indie books. “Independent” in this context includes both self-publishing and small presses operating free from the control of the “Big 5” traditional publishing houses.
How does Periapsis Press make money?
Katie Roome runs Periapsis Press as a hobby for fun.
Our reviews are never paid for, and we are not currently an Amazon affiliate.
Our primary goal with Periapsis Press is to provide trustworthy reviews of indie sci-fi and fantasy. Although we are not opposed to profiting from our work, we have yet to determine a way to do so that does not degrade our credibility by introducing some conflict of interest. Readers should not have to wonder if we are reviewing certain books because it is more profitable to do so. They should be confident in our genuine interest and the book’s quality.
Katie is not proactively seeking contracts in author services such as editing at this time.
Does Periapsis Press use AI?
No, Periapsis Press never uses AI to generate text or images for reviews.
